Posting End Date: 01/19/2023 at 11:59PM HST BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION: The E 4P CORPORATE TAXES -Department of the E CORPORATE TAXES -Division at Hawaiian Electric Industries has 1 - Management vacancy available. - (Role: Professional ) JOB FUNCTION:Supports the Director and Manager, Corporate Taxes, in the calculation and reporting of taxes of Hawaiian Electric Industries (HEI) and its subsidiaries in returns required to be filed in compliance with all tax laws. Involves preparation of the documentation supporting the calculation and proper periodic reporting of taxes, and processing timely payment of taxes. Monitors current filing requirements and legislation that impact calculation and processing of non-income tax payments and certain tax returns for government compliance.Computes executives' imputed income of certain benefits compensation; maintains HEI (including selected subsidiaries) fixed asset records and prepares depreciation reports; coordinates with Controller's office in the development and administration of the department budget, including five-year payroll tax projections; obtains federal and state tax clearances for all HEI companies; and manages department documents and records (index, archive, retrieval, retention and destruction); and manages department calendars.Communicates directly with outside parties, such as IRS and state agencies, financial institutions, and consultants with regards to administrative and document production matters.Provides general administrative support to the Corporate Taxes department.
-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSExecutive Compensation - Coordinates and communicates on a corporate-wide basis to gather information and compute executives' imputed income related to select benefit compensation to ensure consistency across companies

  • Computes the imputed income for executive compensation related to various executive fringe benefits and other executive/non-executive benefits and provides information to payroll accountants
  • Computes and submits monthly withholding tax payments for benefits paid to former executives -
  • Maintains log of executive life insurance proceedsTax Compliance - Works independently to prepare a variety of non-income tax returns/reports for federal, state and county taxes and other informational reports on a timely basis, and calculates and ensures timely payment of taxes due under the law
    • Communicates/coordinates with internal partners to gather required information for filings/calculations
    • Prepares, processes and submits federal and state tax returns (monthly, quarterly, and annual) and related payments for general excise/use taxes, fuel excise taxes, foreign insurance premium excise taxes, and backup withholding taxes.
    • Prepares, processes and submits monthly PSC tax and semi-annual PUC fee payments
    • Analyzes and prepares the annual SUTA joint contribution rate
    • Assists tax specialists with preparation of select tax return workpapers upon request -
    • Assists with resolution of issues related to federal and state tax authorities' notices -
    • Obtains tax clearances from federal and state agencies in person and via the web. Submits registrations and contacts agencies to maintain compliant status.
      -Fixed Assets - Works independently to record and maintain fixed asset records in the company's fixed asset software
      • Communicates/coordinates with internal partners to gather addition/disposal information
      • Records transactions (additions and disposals) into the company's fixed asset system
      • Determines book and tax depreciation lives of assets based on guidance of Controllers and corporate tax department -
      • Prepares/distributes quarterly book and tax depreciation reports
      • Prepares/distributes ad hoc fixed asset reports for other departments as requiredAdministrative - Provides administrative support to the Director and Corporate Taxes department.
        • Prepares department budget and outlook and monitors and administers throughout the year
        • Researches and compiles five-year payroll wage and tax projection reports for budget and rate case use
        • Screens listing of all archive records prior to destruction for income tax audit documentation retention requirements
        • Administers records retention requirements for department files and library
        • Maintains tax filing calendar and monitors compliance of deadlines.
        • Assists in the coordination, compilation and preparation of various federal and state tax and informational filings
        • Maintains log of legislative session bills
        • Maintains logs of document requests, proposed adjustments, and responses related to IRS and state audits.
        • Communicates directly with outside parties, such as IRS and state agencies, financial institutions, and consultants for department matters
        • Schedules in-person and on-line meetings for Corporate Taxes department.
        • Provides various other administrative support to the Director, Manager, and Corporate Taxes department.
          -BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:Knowledge Requirements
          • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles normally acquired through college level financial accounting, auditing, statistics and accounting theory courses or equivalent.
          • Knowledge of budgeting concepts and forecasting principles.
          • Working knowledge of Word, Excel, personal computers and mainframe systems and related software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, database management, etc. -Skills Requirements
            • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization, both verbally and in writing. Ability to maintain pleasant, efficient, professional manner to relate to high-level executives.
            • Excellent organization, planning and scheduling skills critical.
            • Ability to work independently and effectively in a demanding environment, under time constraints that can be stressful.
            • Ability to be flexible and willing to adapt work schedule to meet the deadlines of the many filing requirements. Position will require longer hours during peak filing periods.
            • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
            • Ability to handle several projects simultaneously.Experience Requirements
              • Minimum of 5 years financial experience in a business environment.
              • Experience with preparing/filing corporate federal and state excise tax returns and payments.
              • Experience with fixed asset systems is desired.
