Position: Tax In-Charge (Experienced Tax Senior) Location: Downtown, Honolulu Work Arrangement: We support a hybrid working environment in which in-office work is generally required three to four days out of the work week. Position Summary: As a Tax In-Charge, you will handle a variety of complex tax-related tasks under the supervision of the tax management group. You will prepare and review complex tax returns, supervise less experienced team members, and participate in training programs. This role requires significant technical, client service, supervision, and administrative skills. Overtime and travel may be required for professional development or client assignments. Key Responsibilities: Client Engagements: Tax Returns: Prepare complex tax returns including corporate, partnership, S-Corp, and not-for-profit returns. Review less complex returns prepared by staff to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulations. Issue Resolution: Identify and appropriately resolve most issues that arise during tax return preparation. Perform technical research in situations requiring judgment and formulate alternative courses of action, especially in complex situations. IRS Notices: Analyze IRS notices and draft responses. Review IRS notice responses prepared by staff to ensure they address the issues effectively. Projections and Estimates: Prepare tax projections and estimates to assist clients in planning their tax obligations. Become involved in client tax planning to identify opportunities for tax savings and compliance. Client Interaction: Serve as a key client contact, developing strong working relationships with client personnel. Communicate effectively with clients to obtain necessary information with minimal disruption. Demonstrate an understanding of Firm services to offer appropriate services to clients. Staff Development and Supervision: Time Budgets and Assignments: Delegate work and supervise tax staff, ensuring the most efficient and effective use of staff time. Promptly review staff’s workpapers to maintain high standards of quality and accuracy. Feedback and Training: Provide timely and constructive feedback and on-the-job training to promote the staff’s professional development. Meet with each supervised staff member to provide summary feedback and discuss assignments. Assist with formal training programs and serve as a resource for tax associates and senior associates. Administrative and Technical: Quality Work: Contribute to the client service team by producing quality work with quick turnaround and attentive service. Department Projects: Actively participate in tax department administrative projects and initiatives, taking the lead on some. Establish and/or reinforce performance, efficiency, and quality standards for the tax staff. Industry Expertise: Begin to develop industry expertise and demonstrate proficiency in all tax software programs. Billing and Collection: Get involved with billing and collection responsibilities on smaller clients, including fee discussions. Engagement Management: Manage tax projects, including the preparation of client deliverables, to meet agreed-upon deadlines. Anticipate delays or problems and make appropriate adjustments to ensure that client commitments are met. Monitor staff time compared to budget and inform the manager promptly of anticipated variances. Ensure that all work is performed and documented in accordance with industry and office standards. Demonstrate the ability to work seamlessly across lines of services with the Audit and Consulting practices. Qualifications and Attributes: Accounting and Tax Experience: Demonstrate a basic understanding of applicable accounting procedures, tax regulations, account reconciliation, calculations, journal entries, and analysis Effective Communication Skills: Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, to convey complex information professionally and concisely to clients and team members. Research Skills: Demonstrate familiarity with research tools and methods and the ability to use them effectively Creativity: Think creatively, even in ambiguous situations Standards Application: Apply performance, efficiency and quality standards within the tax department appropriately to assignments Ownership: Take full responsibility for completing assigned work, keeping supervisor informed of issues and status with respect to budget and deadlines Continuous Learning Mentality: Stay updated on industry trends, new regulations, and best practices Other Essential Attributes: Ethical and Professional: Maintain high standards of integrity and confidentiality. Adhere to industry regulations and firm policies, setting a positive example for the team and earning client trust. Business Acumen: Understand business operations and financial processes, enabling strategic decision-making and effective tax strategies tailored to each client’s industry. Strong Interpersonal Skills: Build and maintain strong client relationships and foster a collaborative team environment. Navigate different personalities and work styles for a cohesive team dynamic. Flexibility: Demonstrate an ability to adapt quickly and appropriately to rapidly changing circumstances or varying management styles. Education Requirements: Degree: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting or a related major with a strong accounting concentration. Graduate level tax coursework is desirable Licensing Requirements: Must have earned 150 semester credits and meet all other educational requirements for CPA licensing Required Licenses and Certifications: CPA License: Hold a current and valid certified public accountant’s license, or be working towards obtaining the license by taking and passing the state CPA exam. CPA licensure in the State of Hawaii is highly preferred AICPA Membership: If licensed, be a member in good standing with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Compensation: The salary range for this role is $80,000 to $120,000. The final salary offer is contingent upon the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and market and business conditions.
