A day in your life as a Commercial Credit Underwriter
Under the direction of the Commercial Banking Credit Manager or
Commercial Banking Team Leader, this position is a partner to the
Primary Relationship Officer (PRO), responsible for structuring
deals and the evaluation of financial and other risks associated
with business clients in order to make a credit decision. This
position requires strong commercial credit skills and experience.
Assists in business units compliance with applicable laws,
regulations, regulatory requirements and Bank policies and
procedures, including but not limited to those related to Fair
Banking, Anti-Money Laundering laws and regulations, Bank Secrecy
Act and USA PATRIOT Act.
We'll give you these important responsibilities
- Prepares Credit Approval Memorandum (CAM) package and written
summaries, including forward looking acceptability of risks
- a) Credit Write-up;
- b) Quarterly Asset Quality Report, to include
- c) Annual term loan reviews for stand-alone term loans or
- d) Communicates with client and PRO to obtain information. Is
responsible for the accuracy of the content of these
- Facilitates documentation process with Commercial Banking SVC &
- a) Prepares Advisement Letter for PRO, if appropriate;
- b) Orders documents from CBSS for timely delivery to
- Reviews documents to ensure accuracy as approved, prior to PRO
obtaining the client's signature(s).
- Structures, determines credit covenants, and /or fine-tunes
credit facilities proposed by PRO, and ensures that they conform to
- Monitors client financial condition through review of periodic
financial statements, covenant compliance, and investigation of
conditions in the industry, marketplace and competition. Analyzes
cash flow projections and formulates alternative risk scenarios;
performs other due diligence as necessary. Communicates with client
and PRO to complete analysis.
- Provides input to the monitoring and validation of the assigned
client risk rating
- Performs deal screens with Manager or Team Leader and PROs.
Reviews daily overdrafts report and approves or recommends
for the overdraft; communicates with client and PRO as necessary.
May exercise delegated overdraft and daylight overdraft

- Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
with major in business or related area, or equivalent business
and/or business credit work experience.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years commercial credit experience,
preferably: Satisfactory completion of "Commercial Credit"
training: Commercial credit analyst experience (Level I); and
Commercial lending line experience as a PRO (Level II); or
Equivalent work experience. Must have a thorough understanding of
all aspects of financial statement analysis, including
applicability to cash flow lending.
- Technical Skills: Demonstrated proficiency and expertise with
personal computers in a networked environment and Microsoft
applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) or
similar software. Requires excellent worksheet skills and good
working knowledge of database programs. Knowledge of or ability to
use Bank software and systems.
- Other Job Qualifications: Demonstrated verbal and written
communication skills, including presentation skills. Must have the
ability to express complex ideas in concise and simple terms. Able
to demonstrate strong analytical and quantitative skills, with
excellent attention to detail. Must be able to manage multiple
assignments with changing deadlines in a high pressure environment.
Able to build strong working relationships with a collaborative
approach, but must also be a self-starter with the ability to work
independently. Possesses good interpersonal skills and client
servicing skills to meet the Bank's standards. Must always follow
up and follow through. Able to work flexible hours including
holidays, weekends and evenings as needed or assigned. Must be able
to provide own transportation or to operate a vehicle with a valid
driver's license and commute in a timely manner as required. Able
to travel by air as necessary.
