Job Description:
PUBLIC PROGRAMS & EVENTS COORDINATOR
Are you passionate about making art, culture and design accessible
to the public through innovative and educational public
programming? Are you seeking an opportunity to work in a startup
culture that seeks to deepen the role of museums as incubators of
civic enrichment and empowerment? You will plan and coordinate
special events and public programs (ex. specialized tours,
workshops, performances, lectures, and digital broadcasts) that
advance Shangri La's mission.
Shangri La is a museum for learning about the global cultures of
Islamic art and design in new and inspiring ways. Built in 1937,
Shangri La was inspired by American philanthropist Doris Duke's
(1912-1993) extensive travels throughout North Africa and Western,
Central, South and Southeast Asia, and the landscapes of Hawai`i.
Duke directed in her will that Shangri La be "available to
scholars, students and others interested in the furtherance and
preservation of Islamic art and make the premises open to the
public." In 2002, Shangri La opened as the only museum dedicated
exclusively to Islamic art in the United States and is operated by
the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, one of the Doris Duke
philanthropies.
We are seeking an experienced planning professional to advance the
mission of Shangri La in creative and impactful ways. Located
within Shangri La's center for creative and educational public
engagement and under the direction of the Curator of Programs &
Social Practice, the Public Programs & Events Coordinator manages
the museum's public engagement. In collaboration with colleagues,
vendors, artists, scholars and subject matter experts, the Public
Programs & Events Coordinator will develop and implement inventive
programs (on-site, online and off-site) that enrich and complement
the understanding of Shangri La's collections, exhibitions,
history, and residencies. The ideal candidate believes that museums
improve the quality of people's lives and possesses a vibrant
vision for how public programs inspire, connect and educate
audiences.
A bachelor's degree in a relevant field, and/or equivalent relevant
experience is required; knowledge of Islamic art, culture and
design a plus. Proven experience with event planning and
coordination, including project management software is required for
this position. In addition, experience documenting events via
audio, video and photography is necessary for this position. The
Public Programs & Events Coordinator will demonstrate these
competencies: Collaboration, communication (verbal and written),
technical expertise, imagination, and prioritizing/organizing
work.
Additional requirements: ability to work weeknights and weekends as
needed; ability to travel occasionally (local and national);
currently eligible to work in the US (US citizen or Permanent
Resident).
COVID-19 Vaccination Requirements:
As a condition of employment, new hires are required to be up to
date with an FDA authorized vaccination against COVID-19, including
booster; proof of vaccination series and booster will be required
upon beginning employment. Reasonable accommodation for legally
required exemptions will be considered on a case-by-case-basis in
accordance with applicable law.
COMPENSATION and BENEFITS
- Competitive salary based on experience;
- Excellent benefit package with limited employee
contributions;
- Generous paid time off policies;
- 401(k) plan with employer contribution equal to 15% of base
pay.
