Job Description:
Job Summary:
Under close supervision, performs decontamination and processing
equipment for GI procedures; maintains aseptic or clean technique
as appropriate at all times; prepares procedural area with
equipment, instruments, and supplies; assists in maintenance of
supplies and equipment in specialty areas; participates in routine
endoscopic procedures, including biopsy and polypectomy not
requiring cautery; monitors par levels of supplies and equipment
used during and in support of procedure.
Essential Responsibilities:
+ Directs, escorts or wheels patient into procedure area; explains
procedures to patient and offers instructions accordingly; attempts
to allay fears and anxieties associated with equipment and
procedures.
+ Prepares for GI procedures in procedure area; provides for
patient care by assuring procedure room is in clean and orderly
condition; inspects equipment prior to use to assure operational
order; troubleshoots and remedies and/or removes and reports faulty
equipment; assures adequate amount of appropriate supplies and
instrumentation are available in accordance with endoscopists
preference.
+ Monitors supplies and instruments throughout procedure; evaluates
variables; adjusts to changes in procedures or patient condition;
adjusts instrumentation and supplies; restocks room with necessary
equipment and supplies.
+ Anticipates endoscopists and patient care needs; assists by
performing variety of tasks in routine procedures (e.g., draping
patients, maintaining endoscope position, advancing and withdrawing
endoscope in accordance with endoscopists preference, with staff
assistance, passing and operating a limited variety of instruments
and equipment, holding extremities, moving patients as directed,
etc.).
+ Identifies emergency situations; seeks assistance
immediately.
+ Monitors clean technique of procedure team members; controls
location of contaminated instruments and supplies.
+ Assists in decontamination of all equipment, instruments and
supplies as necessary; assists in cleaning rooms, furniture, and
equipment according to established procedures.
+ Assists in identification, and labeling and proper disposition of
specimens as directed by standard procedure.
+ Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of
specialization.
+ Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to
provide care and/or service appropriate to age groups served.
+ Incorporates the KP Nursing Vision, Model and Values through out
their Nursing Practice.
+ Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to
provide culturally sensitive care and/or service.
+ Performs other duties and accepts responsibility as assigned.
+ Uses supplies and equipment conservatively to maintain inventory
control and cost containment.
+ Respects patients rights to privacy, dignity and safety.
+ Adheres to departmental safety policies; promotes safe
environment for patients and staff.
+ Is flexible and adjusts to changes in assignments, workload and
stressful situations.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience
+ N/A
Education
+ High school diploma; or equivalent combination of education
(lesser) & experience may be considered in lieu of
requirements.
License, Certification, Registration
+ Basic Life Support from American Heart Association
Additional Requirements:
+ Experience or successful completion of training program
(pre-hire, post-hire, or on-the-job) in area of specialty, if
applicable.
+ Must be able to communicate with patients of all educational and
ethnic backgrounds.
+ Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in customer service,
interpersonal relations, oral communication, teamwork, and written
communication.
+ Talking to co-workers, customers, outside vendors, and on the
telephone.
+ Reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
+ Training/giving and receiving instructions.
+ Mathematical ability, attention to detail (e.g. organization,
prioritization, proofing), concentration, and alertness.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Working knowledge of instrument processing.
+ Experience in providing direct patient care.
+ Experience working in the area of Gastroenterology.
+ Post high school training as Medical Assistant or related
area.
