Job Description:

Under direct supervision of registered nurse or provider, performs variety of technical, semi-technical, clerical, and patient attending duties; anticipates in instruction of patients and family members; works cooperatively with staff and other departments. Essential Responsibilities:

  • Establishes and maintains open communication; relays pertinent information to staff members in own department or other departments; assures information is accurate and complete.
  • Reports and records vital signs, tests, procedures, and pertinent data and observations related to patient care duties within scope of practice.
  • Provides written instructions and/or educational materials to patients and family members; reinforces written materials provided by physician, mid-level provider, or registered nurse.
  • Transports patients, equipment, and supplies from one location to another; assists with lifting as needed.
  • Performs chest compressions for patients in cardiac arrest.
  • Maintains clean, safe and well-equipped environment for patients and staff.
  • Utilizes universal precautions during patient care, and related activities; maintains awareness of infection control and emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Participates in economical utilization of supplies; assures that emergency equipment and supply inventories are maintained and available for use.
  • Participates in staff meetings regularly; participates in projects as requested.
  • Assists, if applicable, in orienting, training, and providing performance feedback on emergency department tech staff.
  • Participates in, when applicable, in committee and/or department process improvement activities.
  • Assembles decontamination equipment and participates in disaster procedures as assigned by incident commander.
  • Practices within organizational, departmental, and emergency services specific standards, policies, procedures, processes, protocols or guidelines; practices in accordance with departmental scope of service and emergency department tech scope of practice; works as part of the health care team.
  • Demonstrates and applies competency in basic clinical skills and use of department equipment.
  • Demonstrates sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of specialization.
  • Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide care and/or service appropriate to age groups served.
  • Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide culturally sensitive care and/or service.
  • Performs other duties and accepts responsibility as assigned.
  • Utilizes patient safety equipment for safe patient transfers and injury prevention.
  • May perform patient care to the extent necessary to maintain clinical expertise, competency, and licensing necessary to fulfill job responsibilities and to direct the provision of care on the unit.
  • Provides direct patient care on an as needed basis. Provides services that are within scope of license and in compliance with all legal, regulatory, and policy requirements relevant to clinical role performed.
  • Incorporates the KP Nursing Vision, Model and Values throughout their Nursing Practice. Basic Qualifications: Experience
    • Minimum three (3) months of experience in health care delivery or current nursing student and completed at least one semester of clinical practicum. Education
      • High scool diploma or equivalent (GED).
      • Completion of training as Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B), Army Medical Specialist, Navy Corpsman, or nursing student who has completed one or more semesters of an accredited registered nursing program with clinical coursework and practicum. Three (3) months experience as an ED Tech may be in lieu of education requirements. License, Certification, Registration
        • Basic Life Support from American Heart Association Additional Requirements:
          • N/A Preferred Qualifications:
            • Completion of one or more of the following American Heart Association courses: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
            • Completion of course in basic cardiology or EKG, includes nursing coursework in cardiology or critical care.
